Stillwater barbel are one of the trademark fish that we produce, and they are very popular. We sell fish up to 8 inches in length which include 1 and 2 year old stock. Over the past 25 years we have stocked this species all over the country in both rivers and stillwaters alike.
Barbel are very robust fish and contrary to popular belief they thrive very well in stillwaters as long as there is plenty of dissolved oxygen in the water. Our customers assure us that the fish can perform in in heavily stocked waters and if you ever follow match fishery results you can see that barbel are a key species, even in the cooler months of the year.
The Environment Agency are rightly concerned that barbel are only stocked into suitable waters, so if there is any doubt they will be happy to monitor a sample batch before committing to wholesale stocking. We would certainly not recommend they are stocked into small muddy ponds dominated by carp. If you have any doubts as to whether they will thrive in your fishery please contact us for more information.
