Ide are a new species on our farm. Although this species is non-native to the U.K., ide have been widely stocked into stillwater fisheries over the past 20 years. They are a hardy species that given time will readily grow to 2 – 4 lbs. They complement both ‘mixed and ‘match’ fisheries alike due to their all year round feeding response.
We have embarked on this project in 2013 in partnership with a large Yorshire fish farm ‘Carpvale Fisheries’ (http://www.carpvale.com). Hampshire Carp breed the ide and grows them for a year (2-5″) and they are then moved to Yorkshire where they are grown on further (6- 8″).
Ide are an interesting species as they are the wild ‘non coloured’ variant of the golden orfe, which have been a popular garden pond species for decades. Although they are the same species, we have definitely noticed behaviour differences between the two populations. Our knowledge will increase further over the years. Like the chub , ide are unlikely to spawn in stillwaters but again we will actively seek further information.
